Top five myths about apprenticeships

Careers advice

We are bursting the most common misconceptions surrounding apprenticeships and providing you with the truth behind the myths.

2022 saw the launch of Impact Future’s NEW master’s certification – Level 7 Senior Leader. This 24-month apprenticeship has been developed to meet the requirements of the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship standard awarded by the ILM. A common misconception about apprenticeships is that they are only for manual and trade jobs. As you can see, that is false! We offer a substantial range of industry-led apprenticeships in a variety of different sectors.

In this article, Impact Futures dispels common misconceptions regarding apprenticeships and highlights the benefits to those looking to train and kickstart a long-lasting career.

Myth number 1. Apprenticeships are only for school leavers.

When you think of apprenticeships, it is the natural thought process to instantly think of 16-year-old high school graduates. Well, you will be pleased to know that this is NOT the case! We offer apprenticeships ranging from level 2 (GCSE equivalent) to level 7 (master’s equivalent). An apprenticeship can help anyone – at any age, advance their career.

Myth number 2. Apprenticeships do not offer valuable qualifications.

You can only achieve basic, entry-level qualifications through an apprenticeship programme. This is a very inaccurate misconception of apprenticeships. In fact, apprenticeships offer a ladder of opportunity that allows learners to progress from traineeships and intermediate apprenticeships right up to higher education and master’s degrees.

Myth number 3. Apprentices only do bog-standard work.

Yes, people believe that apprentices only do the most mundane tasks that no one else in the workplace wants to do. You guessed it, this is in fact, false! No matter what industry you are working in, or what job you are doing, there are going to be parts of the job that are not as exciting or interesting as other parts. Unfortunately, that’s just life. However, an apprenticeship gives you that experience and much more! Not only does it offer you the experience of basic work etiquette, but also provides you with firsthand work experience you will not get in any other training programme.

Myth number 4. Apprenticeships do not lead to full-time jobs.

This is not true. In fact, over 90 per cent of apprentices stay in employment after their apprenticeship ends. And according to the Department for Education research, a quarter of former apprentices (23%) secure a promotion within 12 months of qualifying.

Myth number 5. It is far too difficult and complicated to apply for an apprenticeship.

Applying for an apprenticeship may seem daunting and complicated at first glance – especially if you are new to the process. However, being industry leaders in learning and development, we have made the application process as straightforward and supportive as possible. Our friendly, caring, and enthusiastic care team are experts in this area, and they are available to answer any questions you may have to provide you with a clear picture of our apprenticeship programme.

Did you know, more people are now choosing an apprenticeship as an alternative to university? This is due to the incredible career progression, training opportunities, and firsthand knowledge and experience apprenticeships offer.
